When a creator switch can pause your ad
GMV Max can automatically include creator videos in advertising, but that does not mean a brand can keep using a video indefinitely. A creator setting change or the end of a collaboration period can pause a live ad.
To use an affiliate post in Shop Ads, the creator must currently allow the seller to use affiliate videos in Shop Ads. TikTok says ads using that post are paused automatically if the creator turns that authorization off or if the affiliate collaboration period ends. GMV Max can automatically include authorized affiliate videos as creatives, but its automation does not guarantee the duration of use.
- A paused ad may reflect creator authorization, not creative performance or budget.
- A creator selected for a post and a creator selected for durable ad use should not be evaluated with the same checklist.
- Keep posting status, Shop Ads authorization, collaboration end date, and owner as separate operating facts.
Two conditions can pause an ad automatically
TikTok for Business says that ads using an affiliate post are paused automatically if the creator turns off the “Authorize sellers to use affiliate videos in Shop Ads” toggle. The same result follows when the affiliate collaboration period ends. That means an ad can stop even when nobody on the brand team has removed the creative in Ads Manager.
The distinction to keep clear is between a post continuing to exist and a seller continuing to be able to use it in advertising. A video can remain public on the creator’s account and keep collecting views while its Shop Ads authorization changes. Counting every published post as available ad inventory therefore overstates what the brand can actually use.
This is not a reason to treat creators as an unreliable channel. It is a reason to name the dependency accurately. The brand, the creator, and the platform each hold a different part of the operating state.
If the team records only that a video was posted, it cannot tell which part changed when an ad stops.
What does GMV Max automate, and what does it not automate?
GMV Max can automatically include authorized affiliate videos as advertising creatives. That reduces the manual work of moving eligible videos into an ad setup one by one. It does not, however, create an independent right for a brand to use a video for any period it chooses.
Creative selection and authorization are separate layers. GMV Max helps select among videos that are currently eligible for advertising. The creator’s toggle and the collaboration period determine whether the video remains eligible.
Treating those layers as one feature leads to a false assumption: because a video entered automatically, it will remain there indefinitely.
| Operating question | What GMV Max can do | What the team must still verify |
|---|---|---|
| Which videos should enter ads? | It can automatically include authorized affiliate videos | Keep a list of which videos are actually in delivery |
| Can the seller use a video now? | It does not guarantee authorization status | Check the creator toggle and collaboration period |
| Can the video remain in ads next month? | It does not extend a period | Decide on extension or replacement before the end date |
| Why did an ad stop? | It does not diagnose every pause | Separate setting changes, period expiry, and other ad issues |
Automation is therefore not the absence of operations. It makes the handoff points more visible. Because videos can enter without a manual upload, the team needs an equally deliberate way to see when they leave.
Is the best person to post also the best person for sustained ad use?
Not necessarily. A collaboration intended to secure a post may prioritize product fit, a useful content format, and a reliable publishing date. A collaboration that may be amplified through Shop Ads needs those checks plus a conversation about current authorization, the collaboration period, and the intended advertising use.
A high-performing video alone does not prove that the ad setup will remain stable.
Start by separating two pools. One pool can be broad: creators who help the brand learn from product response and published content. The other pool contains creators whose collaboration can also support an advertising plan.
The pools may overlap, but they should not be selected by pretending that a single question covers both jobs.
Write the purpose first
State whether the collaboration is meant to learn from sales response or to create a candidate for Shop Ads amplification.
Confirm advertising conditions
Ask whether the creator can authorize Shop Ads use and when the collaboration period ends. Do not infer this from a public post alone.
Separate post terms from advertising conditions
Posting volume, publishing dates, and revision scope are not the same facts as advertising authorization.
Keep replacement candidates
If one strong video leaves the usable pool, another creator and product path should be ready to test.
Recheck before delivery
Immediately before advertising, verify the post’s current authorization and collaboration period. [^tiktok-affiliate-creative-authorization]
This does not mean every creator should accept the same arrangement. It means the brand should align what it expects with the state that the platform actually permits before calling a video part of the media plan.
What should be recorded separately in the operating plan?
A collaboration record should separate at least four facts: whether a post will be published, whether the seller can currently use it in Shop Ads, how long that state is expected to last, and who checks for a change. A single note saying “available for ads” makes it easy to miss a changed toggle or an approaching end date.
| Field in the operating plan | Fact to record | When to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Posting status | Before posting, published, or publication not confirmed | On the planned date and immediately after publishing |
| Shop Ads authorization | Current permission and where it was confirmed | Before ad entry and during regular checks |
| Collaboration period | Start date, end date, and any extension | Before start and before expiry |
| Advertising plan | Test only, or budget behind a proven video | During collaboration design and before launch |
| Owner | Person who confirms with the creator and person who watches delivery | Whenever conditions change |
This is not a template for a legal agreement. It is the minimum operational record that lets an advertising operator answer why a creative stopped and who needs to confirm what next. Rights, compensation, and contract language need their own appropriate review.
What should the team check when an ad pauses?
When an ad pauses, do not begin by trying to reuse the same video through a different route. First separate the cause into three paths: the creator turned off Shop Ads authorization, the collaboration period ended, or another account, creative, or policy issue is involved. TikTok identifies the first two as direct automatic-pause conditions.
Each cause needs a different response. A changed setting requires a current conversation with the creator. A period expiry requires a decision about extension and its conditions.
A different advertising problem belongs in an Ads Manager and policy review. Calling all three cases “the creative died” hides both the action and the person who can take it.
A short incident record helps avoid repeating the same diagnosis. Record the ad and post URL, when delivery stopped, the authorization state observed, the collaboration end date, what evidence was checked, and the next owner. This is more useful than a generic note because the next person can see whether the condition has already been confirmed or merely assumed.
The practical lesson is that ad creative is not only a folder of files. It is a current set of permissions and operating conditions. A brand that wants to scale creator video through advertising needs to read performance and continued availability in the same operating view.
Common questions
Does a video in GMV Max remain available to the brand indefinitely?
It cannot be assumed. TikTok says ads using an affiliate post are paused automatically if the creator turns off Shop Ads authorization or the affiliate collaboration period ends. GMV Max’s automatic inclusion helps select currently authorized videos; it does not guarantee a duration of use. [^tiktok-affiliate-creative-authorization] [^tiktok-product-gmv-max]
If a video remains public, will its ad continue to run?
No. A public post and a seller’s ability to use that post in Shop Ads are different states. Even if the video remains publicly visible, the ad can pause when the creator’s authorization changes or the collaboration period ends. [^tiktok-affiliate-creative-authorization]
Will TikTok notify the brand before a creator changes the setting?
These two official pages do not describe a pre-change notification process. For collaborations expected to support advertising, use a routine check before launch and before the collaboration end date, and keep replacement candidates. Do not plan on a notification that the documentation does not promise.
Does a contract term make it unnecessary to check the platform setting?
No. A contract addresses the parties’ agreement, while actual Shop Ads availability also depends on the current platform setting and collaboration period. Review both the agreed scope and the live authorization state. Specific legal terms and rights require appropriate professional review.
